Highly Efficient and Reliable Bottom Quench Technology A New Option for Environmental Protection and Cost Saving for Coal to Hydrogen

Release time:2015-01-29

Hydrogen is an important raw material in the refining, petrochemicals and chemicals industry. Gasification is the core technology for coal to hydrogen production and hydrogen production units require gasifiers with high efficiency and stability. Therefore, advanced gasification technology with high efficiency, large gasiferis and wide coal suitability becomes more and more popular.

On January 29, 2015, Mr. Xin Chengqin, Coal to Chemical technology director at Wison Engineering, attended the 2nd China H2 Production & Advanced Gasification Conference in Nanjing, Jiangsu Provience, where he gave the keynote speech together with representatives from Shell on the topic of “High efficient and reliable bottom quench technology, design, construction and operational experience sharing--Wison-Shell”.

In addition to allowing for more compact design, bottom quench technology, with simplified line-up, can reduce 40% Capex compared with Shell Syngas Cooler Processing.   The dry feed entrained flow gasification technology can process different types of coals including lignite, Sub-bituminous coal, bituminous coal, anthracite and petcoke with a wide coal suitability. Besides, it has the following advantages: low coal and oxygen consumption, high efficiency, carbon conversion and syngas capacity; waste solid deactivation, less water treatment, environmentally responsible and reliable. Multiple-burners classical design enables scale-up capacity, suitable for mega projects.

Wison and Shell started their technology cooperation in 2011. The technology, developed by Shell, was industrialized by both Wison and Shell. This cooperation combines Shell’s profound experience in coal and residue gasification technologies and Wison’s experience in engineering design and project management. In November 2013, the bottom quench plant start up successfully at Wison Clean Energy’s Phase III coal to gas project.

Recently, this advanced technology has been adopted in Hulunbuir Jinxin Chemical Co., Ltd.’s coal to syngas project in Inner Mongolia.
